Malmo 2024: A Retrospective of Malmo 2013

26 April 2024

With the Eurovision Song Contest returning to Malmö, Sweden, in 2024, it marks the year as a commemorative one for the Mr Eurovision Australia blog. When Malmö last hosted in 2013, that was also the year that this blog started. It’s hard to believe it’s been 11 years. While a small blog in which I write primarily for fun, I dare say it’s the longest serving Australian Eurovision blog or website around. Malmö 2024 will be the 12th Eurovision Song Contest I will cover, and over the years I have also been to Eurovision three times: Stockholm 2016, Kyiv 2017 and Lisbon 2018. They were truly wonderful memories, especially the first one.

Below is the post that covered all the highs, lows and analysis of Malmö 2013. Except for the addition of some videos, tidying the headings and fixing a typo or two, it remains unchanged. It’s fascinating to see my thought processes of the time, and even responding to issues like producers deciding the running order, changes to the vote reading, and even Australia’s chances of ever being in Eurovision. Most fascinating of all is the ethos expressed in the first paragraph that remains unchanged today. The strength of Eurovision, the one thing that really unites us and keeps us coming back, is the music.
